The application of RPM in rapid tooling manufacturing (Part 1)

I. preface

rapid tooling (RT) is a new technology that applies rapid prototyping (RPM) to make tools or molds quickly and conveniently. RT has been widely valued by product developers and mold industry. It can be said that RT is a model of the combination of traditional rapid tooling technology and modern advanced manufacturing technology

rt is characterized by short molding cycle, simple process, easy promotion, low molding cost, accuracy and service life to meet specific functional needs, and good comprehensive economic benefits. It is especially suitable for new product development and trial production, process verification and function verification, as well as multi variety and small batch production. At present, RT has been widely used in automobile manufacturing, aerospace, military industry, electronics, medicine, home appliances and other fields. Using RPM technology, you can directly manufacture molds, or use rapid physical prototype to manufacture molds through intermediate transformation

second, using RPM prototype to directly manufacture molds

direct method refers to that according to the CAD model of the mold, the automobile manufactured by RP system adopting micromillr technology ABS is directly manufactured and formed at the same anti-collision level. It does not need RP to make samples, nor does it depend on whether the experimental machine is good or not. It depends on the traditional mold manufacturing process, which is particularly fast for mold manufacturing. It is a promising rapid mold manufacturing method

1. Lom method directly manufactures molds

laminated object manufacturing (LOM) process, also known as laminated entity manufacturing or layered entity manufacturing, was successfully studied by Michael feygin of American helisys company in 1986 and launched a commercialized machine

the paper-based prototype formed by LOM Process can be directly used to replace the traditional wood mold, which not only greatly shortens the molding time, but also has higher dimensional accuracy, strength and dimensional stability than the wood mold. For the high-precision mold with complex shape, its advantages are particularly prominent. Rapid prototyping parts have better mechanical strength and stability, and their performance is better than hardwood, which can withstand high temperature of 200 ℃. After surface treatment, it can be used as a wood mold for sand casting, which can generally be used to repeatedly make 50 ~ 100 sand molds. Its disadvantage is that the RP prototype will deform after long-term preservation

The LOM method is mainly used to manufacture paper molds for the following purposes: wax mold filled with paraffin, gypsum mold, plastic die-casting mold and low melting point alloy mold, etc

2. SLS method for directly manufacturing molds

using SLS (selective laser sintering) process, metal powder coated with adhesive can be directly sintered. When the model is manufactured, it is heated to remove the adhesive, and the model is metal infiltrated to obtain the metal mold

sls method can select different powders to manufacture molds for different purposes. SLS method can be used to directly sinter metal molds or ceramic molds, as plastic molding molds and stamping forming molds for injection molding, die casting, extrusion and so on. The mold made by SLS can also be directly used as a metal mold after copper infiltration
